Taco Bell Chihuahua Dead & Other Taco News

Gidget Is Dead!

Gidget, the Taco Bell chihuahua is dead at 15. She suffered a massive stroke on Tuesday night. From 1997 to 2000 Gigdet delivered the line ”Yo quiero Taco Bell,” Spanish for “I want Taco Bell,” in a male voice dubbed by Argentine actor Carlos Alazraqui.

Baja Fresh vs. Kogi BBQ

The beleaguered fast casual chain Baja Fresh created a little heat for itself when it announced on July 15, 2009, in Nation’s Restaurant News that it was creating a new menu including “dishes with bolder flavors, including new “Baja Kogiâ€? Korean barbecue tacos — in the style of the popular Kogi BBQ taco truck in Los Angeles that has made headlines across the country.” President Chuck Rink said “the Baja Kogi taco is not meant to refer to the Kogi truck version, which has developed a cult following in Los Angeles, but the combination of grilled beef or chicken with a kimchee slaw is a response to evolving consumer tastes.”

Loyal Kogites  got fired up about this apparent rip off of their beloved truck and made a ruckus on Kogi’s Twitter and blog pages. Seems it was a big enough deal to cause Baja Fresh to change their plans a bit. Again from NRN, we read, “Chuck Rink, president of Baja Fresh, responded with a statement posted by The Orange County Register saying the chain’s Korean barbecue style products are “by no means intended to seem ‘stolen’ from the famous LA-area Kogi taco truck.â€? Rink went on to say, “We have since learned ‘gogi’ is the general word and will be moving to change our naming to Gogi for the Irvine store and for any future roll outs of these products.” To their credit, the Kogi people only said this on their blog, “Just to let you all know, we are definitely not affiliated with any of this business. All of our energies have been focused on serving you the best we can. What you think we should do?”

Where’s The Coolest Looking Taco Truck?

I wonder who has the coolest looking taco truck out there. If you know of any, send me a pic. Here are two of the sickest rides that I’ve seen. Personally, I’d take the kombi. It’s a far cry from Men At Work’s fried out kombi they drove around in their Down Under video. Don’t remember them? Too young or drug addled? Well, I’ve posted the video to help you remember.
